DESCRIPTION
Archival pigment print | 2018
In The Champagne Tower works, David Kitz set out to represent his hometown of Santa Monica in ways that defamiliarize the familiar. Inspired by his father, a plein air watercolorist who often portrays familiar landmark locations, Kitz challenges himself to portray the same locations through photography. Using a telephoto lens to photograph midsections of the tallest building in Santa Monica, Kitz represents the architecture in the same fragmented way he represents most of his subjects. In the development stage, the artist inadvertently exposed his negatives to the sun, further abstracting the 1971 facade with colorful streaks of light.
